Google Pixel 9 Review: AI Overload

The Google Pixel 9 marks another entry in Google's Pixel line, now priced at $799—a $100 increase from last year’s Pixel 8. While this new model boasts enhanced hardware and a fresh set of features, it seems Google's overemphasis on AI is overshadowing its core strengths.

Performance and Specs

The Pixel 9 comes equipped with Google's Tensor G4 chip and 12GB of RAM, up from the previous generation’s 8GB. This upgrade theoretically enhances multitasking capabilities, though it's primarily designed to support the device's burgeoning array of AI features. The phone also offers 128GB of storage as standard, with a 256GB model available for an additional $100.

Design Changes

The Pixel 9 introduces a new design language with flat aluminum sides, replacing the Pixel 8's curved edges. This shift impacts ergonomics, making the phone less comfortable to hold. The rear camera bar has been replaced by a more conventional horizontal oval bump, which, while less distinctive, doesn't detract from the phone’s overall aesthetics.

Display

One of the Pixel 9’s standout features is its display. The brightness has been increased to 2,700 nits, making it highly visible even under direct sunlight. The 6.3-inch screen, up from 6.2 inches in the Pixel 8, retains the adaptive 60-120Hz refresh rate, providing a smoother visual experience compared to many competitors still limited to 60Hz.

AI Features

Google's focus on AI is evident, but not necessarily advantageous. The Pixel 9 introduces several new AI features that feel more gimmicky than groundbreaking. For example, the Reimagine feature in Magic Editor allows users to transform photos of streets into rivers, and Add Me creates group photos that never happened in reality.

The new Pixel Weather app offers AI-generated summaries of daily weather, which seems redundant given existing weather app capabilities. Additionally, Pixel Studio converts text prompts into images, a feature that, while functional, feels somewhat frivolous.

On the positive side, Pixel Screenshots is a genuinely useful AI feature. It catalogs screenshots and remembers on-screen text, making it easier to locate information from past screenshots.

Camera Upgrades

The Pixel 9's camera system includes an upgraded 48MP ultra-wide lens, while the 50MP main lens and 10.5MP selfie camera remain unchanged. The ultra-wide lens offers improved light sensitivity, enhancing low-light performance. The phone’s camera continues to produce high-quality images with reliable performance in various conditions.

Battery Life

Battery life on the Pixel 9 is exceptional. During a continuous TikTok video playback test at 50% brightness, it lasted 19 hours and 20 minutes, surpassing both the Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 8. Normal usage extends battery life to around 24 hours between charges, marking a significant strength of the device.

Overall Impression

For Pixel enthusiasts, the Pixel 9 provides a solid upgrade with excellent battery life and quality cameras. However, Google's push towards AI-driven features seems excessive. Many of the new AI functionalities appear more like gimmicks than essential tools. Features like AI-generated weather summaries and photo enhancements may appeal to some, but they can also detract from the genuine user experience.

If AI innovations aren’t crucial for you, the Pixel 9 might not offer enough compelling advancements to justify the upgrade. While it remains a robust and reliable Android phone, the overemphasis on AI could be a turnoff for users who value practical, tangible improvements over flashy but superficial features.
